An agnostic is defined in a dictionary as: a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God. While this is how we commonly view this word, we discover the word, agnostic, comes from the Greek where it really means “without knowledge”. We could use the word “ignorant,” for that is precisely what it means. But ignorance of what? The answer is the God, the one above all gods. For, as far as the God is concerned, knowledge of all other things is irrelevant compared to the knowledge of Him. Near death experiencers who have experienced this knowledge first hand, can vouch for the truth of this statement. The Bible also talks about this in Col 2:2-3 …that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
We owe it to ourselves to not be ignorant about this God. Can I encourage you to do what Josh McDowell did. He studied the Bible to prove to his Christian friends that it was all a load of rubbish. He wrote a book about his research called Evidence that Demands a Verdict.
But we Christians are not without fault here. Brennan Manning (1934-2013) once wrote: “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle.” Without any doubt this is true, for Christians have not portrayed Christ as they should have.
